Mark A. McCann Declares His Candidacy
for Howard County, Indiana

Current Chief Deputy Prosecuting
Attorney, Mark McCann, announced his candidacy
to become the next Prosecuting Attorney
for Howard County, Indiana. McCann, 44,
is a Republican seeking the Prosecuting
Attorney seat in 2010. The primary election
is scheduled for May of 2010.
McCann has served as the
Chief Deputy, under current Prosecutor James
R. Fleming, for the last 15 years.
He has been a part-time prosecutor for 18
of his 19 years practicing law. Currently,
he also has a private legal practice with
his firm McCANN I McCann | Legal, Attorneys and
Counselors at Law. His areas of specialty
include Civil Litigation, School Law, Banking
& Financial Institutions, Real Estate,
and Corporate & Small Business Law.
If elected, McCann intends to continue in
his private practice, part-time.
McCann stated in his announcement
that, if elected, he will continue the tradition
of fairness and integrity he has displayed
during his service with the Prosecutor's
Office.
McCann has prosecuted the
most serious street crimes and conducted
complex white-collar investigations. McCann
stated that, if elected as Prosecutor, he
will continue to be fair, but firm. He added
that he will continue to work with, and
listen to, victims of crimes, citizens,
and members oflaw enforcement in order to
give the Prosecutor's Office a full understanding
and assist in decision making.
McCann further stated that
with the office comes a unique blend of
authority and responsibility, and he intends
to use these qualities of the office to
ensure that Howard County remains safe.
He adds that it is important for prosecutors
to act as partners with the police and the
community to help prevent crime and develop
innovative and practical solutions to attack
crime at its early stages in a proactive,
versus reactive, manner.
Finally, McCann stated
that, as Prosecutor, his focus will not
only be on crimes against persons, but on
ensuring the safety of our children from
being abused or becoming the targets of
sexual predators as well.
He added that we should never lose sight
of our duty to protect the most vulnerable
people in our county, including the elderly,
youth, and targets of bias or domestic violence.
McCann is a 1982 graduate
of Haworth High School and he earned a bachelor's
degree in Psychology and Criminal Justice
from Indiana University in 1986. McCann
earned his law degree from Valparaiso University
School of Law in 1990.
McCann is a member of the
Indiana State Bar Association, Howard County
Bar Association, and the National District
Attorneys Association. He is admitted to
practice in Indiana, before the Northern
and Southern Federal District Courts of
Indiana, and before the United States Supreme
Court.
McCann has been married
to his wife, Julia, for 19 years and they
have one daughter.
The seat will become vacant
when current Prosecutor James R. Fleming's
term expires at the end of 2010.
